Why does British media insist that I am oppressed?

Seriously the madness needs to stop, they take every negative issue that happens to a woman make it represent the entire Muslim population of Britain. Yes there a few that wear veil but there most that do not. There are some who dont integrate but most of us do. Yes we do get arranged marriage but you know what? WE CHOOSE TO, and yet they want ALWAYS focus on the exception where that is not the case. I went to college, I am educated, I am independent, I am social, I am fun, and yes I also am Muslim and Pakistani origin. Why must I always have to see people of my identity depicted in the media as village idiots. Its just not the case and you know what one day I will get married, probably an arranged marriage, and I will probably quite my job and become a housewive and a mother. And there should be no problem with that, because I CHOOSE to do so and it should be considered a respected job.

Why does British media insist that I am oppressed?
Yes the media does tend to portray the average Muslim woman as such but never fear there are many of us 'white' people who are open minded enough to realise this is a sweeping generalisation. The Muslim culture is at this time having a hard time in Britain but shouldn't feel too isolated as it has happened to other minorities in the past such as people of Irish Catholic descent and most of it is based on ignorance and fear. The media will look for someone else to pick on in time but I wonder who will be next... The poles? The Romanians?

By the way a housewife and Mother is an honourable job, just don't teach your kids to be as narrow minded and bigoted as those whom you scald!
Reply:A lot of the oppression we see in the media is real, and a case like yours is an exception.

Maybe because you have lived in the west it is more common for you to feel free to think and act for yourself, but there are still many women who do not have that freedom.

Go to the RAWA site and you'll see...

These women are FIGHTING for the freedoms you have the opportunity to live.
Reply:Good for you! You need to keep raising the profile of modern muslim women. People have got sucked into the political correctness madness, and believe that ethnic minorities are demanding things that they really are not. This is only contributing to segregation and not intergration.
Reply:Dont let the media define you, think of where you wanna be in life, and create that path if possible. You gotta make your own future.
Reply:I'm british, and must agree that media in this country seem to be unable to resist a story relating to muslims. I personally don't care how you choose to live your life, as long as you are law-obiding, and as a household make some sort of contribution to the economy as everyone else does. Otherwise, I understand at the moment it is probably sometimes difficult to be a muslim woman in Britain, but remember that we believe a lot that the media tells us, and for example if there is a story based on arranged marriages (usually negative), we are led to believe a number of things which might not be true. With different cultures, there will always be differences, and inevitably clashes. The media likes to create friction between people in the UK, usually if they're running out of stories. Not all of us choose to listen, remember!
Reply:Yeah, it's daft isn't it !

The media insist on always putting people into boxes, it's the only way they can function - it seems !

Don't take it personally - they'll say anything to sell their papers.

Reply:That is what make living in A free country great.....

I love the freedom to choose what I want.

If your media is anything like the media here in North America....

I can see you point.

I Think it will get better, I hope.
Reply:my muslim friend lives in the Bishops avenue , sends his kids to Highgate private school and has a countless number of mercs parked outside his house.....far from oppressed...

Reply:ignore them, your the woman, do whatever you want and don't let anyone hold you back

three cheers!!!WOOHOO

your free

just kick all of the boys in the nutts and tell them to keep away
Reply:Maybe you personally are not oppressed, some Muslim women DON'T have the options you have and some have been murdered by their own family members if they show any signs of independence and wanting to live outside their culture
Reply:Its just the media. They like to portray things their way whether its correct or not.♥ღ♥
