In what ways have both the media and multinational corp. created new cultural identities?

After responding to another on the way that the modern folk-concept of Santa Clause is actually a product of Coca Cola, it brough tme to wonder what other cultural phenomenons (either at a local or global level) have undergone such dramatic changes due to similar circumstances.

Can anyone else think of examples where either large corporations, or segments of the media, have been able to bring about such a dramatic shift (or even a complete metamorphosis) in a cultural/social phenomenon such as this?

In what ways have both the media and multinational corp. created new cultural identities?
