Why do we make a media spectacle on dog fighting, but not address child abuse?

I know of a case were social services was notified of abuse for months and ignored the situation. Now, the child is near death and social services is to blame. I am not saying the Vick dog fighting case is not appalling, but can we focus the same ammount of attention on child abuse also?

Why do we make a media spectacle on dog fighting, but not address child abuse?
We as a society feel somewhat powerless in stopping child abuse because it such a broad problem. It's hard to concentrate all our energy to it when it everywhere but yet unseen in many cases.

We can concentrate on THIS dog fighting case because it's been put in the forefront and now is right in front of us.

Of course people want to end child abuse but were to begin ? It's a shame but social services may be overwhelmed with cases or employees may be burned out. Plus, they are lacking that "celebrity" status. Look how the media plays up Lindsey Lohan and her like. There's nothing to gain in reporting about a poor, abused 3 yr old in a drug infested part of the ghetto. Sad really.
Reply:The reason is because the government has been looking for a superstar athlete to "make an example of" for a long time. They have been unsuccessful in getting Barry Bonds, so they are directing their energies elsewhere. And it is a shame that we look at the Vick dog fighting case with such disdain, but we ignore cases of child abuse, and allow athletes such as Ron Artest and others in many sports to beat and abuse their wives and girlfriends, with no penalty from their respective leagues and no jail time.

And by the way JonBenet's family was wealthy, as was Laci Petersen's. Poor families are not afforded such attention and coverage.
Reply:Child abuse, child kidnappings and child murders become media spectacles all the time - so why ask a question based on a lie?

I bet you never heard of Jon-Bonet Ramsey.
Reply:That's nuts. There is alot of attention paid to child abuse. It's on the news almost every day. Both are terrible.
Reply:Because Micheal Vick is a huge celebrity with a 130 million dollar football contract and wheel barrel loads of endorsement money.

The media needs to sell stories and the more sensational the better.
Reply:I agree with you but as you know, the media focuses on celebrities and unfortunately, many people lap it up. That's how they obtain their ratings.

As far as the Vick situation goes, I'm glad that they have brought that to the forefront, primarily because so many abusers of children, wives and mass murderers, began their careers by abusing animals. If you look up the statistics, that is a proven fact.
Reply:The problem is that child abuse doesn't hold peoples attention like having a sports hero busted for dog fighting.

Or some blond idiots drunk/drugged driving.
Reply:Well if Michael Vick had been forcing children to fight, then drowning, electrocuting or hanging the losers, that would have been REALLY big news.
Reply:Your question is ridiculous....do you really think less attention is paid to child abuse than dogfighting? Try reading a newspaper.
Reply:I think we do focus more attention on child abuse. In our local media market we had a foster child brutally abused and killed by his foster parents and it was news everyday and the State legislature within a year passed new laws to better monitor and check out foster parents. Even another adjoining state is trying to find a way to punish another one of the persons involved in the killing and hiding of the body.
