Any ideas on how to aquire better social skills?

Well I'm 22 years old and I was an only child, and raised by divorced, "dysfunctional" people. My sole caretaker was very reserved and didn't do a lot of socializing or verbal communications. I did a lot of drugs and drinking through my high school years and everything was fine then but I'm starting to realise how "fake" I seem to ppl and big social events where you're supposed to be and look normal..... haha well let's just say it isn't my bag. I'm a quiet person and if I simply don't feel like chatting I won't do it, and I'm assumed to have a communicating disability, to which some degree is probably true! So anyways, are there any books on how to act proper and feel good about being in the spot-light? I have great confidence, I just don't like making other ppl feel uncomfortable. = [ Any advice? Your thoughts, or even references, to any media or any websites or anything at all would be SO appreciated.

Hey, I'm 18 this year and I've been there like you too.

You should totally read some books on Psychology and Sociology, I'm sure it would help you a lot on understanding people, how they act and why, as well as how to act yourself and peoples' perceptions.

Don't worry about it, it is only temporary, and yes your caretaker is partly to blame because they haven't been a positive influence on you. Especially since you had to resort to drugs and alcohol when you were my age.

So anyway, don't worry about yourself. Just BE yourself and people should like you for who you are. If they don't, then they're not worth your time anyway. If you wanna talk at a specific time, talk. If you don't wanna, then don't! Simple as that. Doesn't mean you're a bad person. Just means you know what you want in life, as with other things.

As soon as you start thinking like that, you'll be just fine. =]

And one last thing; SMILE! =D

I hope I helped, but read about Psychology for sure...it's bound to help anyone, really.
Reply:Awesome!
