Some politicians slam lobbyists. The media slams lobbyists. Yet lobbyists fight for every different cause under the sun. Many causes are broad scale and for the public good. Others are profit oriented for the benefit of those paying the lobbyist's salary.
Would you be distracted from becoming a lobbyist because of the social stigma associated with the profession?
Or do you consider lobbying to be a worthwhile profession such that the negatives associated with the profession are really more about the media spin than reality?
If you championed some positive change for society through your lobbying efforts, would you claim to be a lobbyist?
So many attachments of perception to this word now. Have we become myoptic to this valuable process called lobbying because of the endless march to become more politically correct and avoid the negative monikers the media would attach to anything they can compartmentalize and spit out in a 10 secound Sound Bite?
In today's media, is "Lobbyist" automatically a dirty word? Does public know the dif beween good/bad lobbyist?
Lobbyists are the pimps;
special (usually corporate) interests are the johns;
and,
politicians are the whores.
Reply:I'm afraid the damage done by some lobbyists makes overcoming the label pretty difficult. It's like the word propaganda. It actually only means putting out information in an attempt to convince someone of the rightness of your cause, but everyone assumes that it's a bad thing or done in the service of a bad cause.
