Socio Factors!?
Religion:

You can be forbidden to eat meat on Fridays (as the Catholics once were) or forbidden to mix dairy and meat (as I think the Jews are) or forbidden to eat pork (as both Muslims and Jews are).

Culture:

Some foods have become 'symbolic' of a people, such as pasta for Italy, potatos for Ireland, pork and sauerkraut for Germany, sushi for Japan, etc.

Some other types of diets are also just as tied to geography and culture but perhaps not quite as popular, such as fresh fish, olives in Greece, lamb, dates in the Middle East, etc.

Social Class:

The higher the social class, the more frequent the formal and grand get-togethers and dinners with the best ingredients and recherche menus cooked by professional chefs. Here you'll find game, caviar, fine wines, etc. The higher class of course can pay for the best in food and also for hired help to do all the work which of course the middle and lower classes can neither afford not have the time for.

Peer pressure:

Take models who starve themselves because they need to stay competitive and in demand.

The Media:

Same as above. Puts terrific pressure on young women to conform to an unrealistic and unhealthy size.

Finance:

That'll dictate where and what you eat for sure. Although it is possible to eat healthily for less money, most people who put in long hours at work and then commuting will have little energy/interest in spending the time preparing a wholesome meal. It's so much easier just to grab a hotdog or some other fast food item.
Reply:Google gives plenty of reading on "food taboos+ religion ";

as well "social factors+ nutrition"

"peer pressure+eating" goes into school lunches, junk food, annorexia etc

"advertisments +eating"

Could not find suitable sites for finance and eating.

That is a really comprehensive piece of research. From what I saw, I would start with Ads and eating as it was more inclusive than the other sites.
