Can someone break down this question into simple terms? Mind too simple.?

"Explain how social concepts of desire and belonging are used in media and visual production to construct the consumer."

Yes. I need someone to dumb this question down for me.

To be more specific, I don't understand what "construct the consumer" means. How do we make a consumer? What does this question want from me?

Thanks in advance.

What is in commercials that shows how people can be popular and have their desires fulfilled by using a product?

Write about how beautiful ladies are in beer commercials, slim guys who have lost 300 lbs are eating at subway, etc. People see the commercials and want to buy the products in order to feel more socially acceptable.
Reply:How the Consumer's Mind set is changed by them is the question
Reply:when you construct a consumer to me means-you make the consumer want to be or to have what your selling.

like the models they use to advertise lip stick they use girls with thick full pretty lips.

If you notice that your are on the inside looking out

you rarely see yourself but what you see around you is what you want to become.

media and visual aids are highly used to deliver that concept.
Reply:why do advitisers put so many prodctson tv radio etc and what are the benefits and outcomes
Reply:it means for advertising they use gathered information about groups in society what appeals to them and then they use that in their commercials to appeal to the consumer and to construct a consumer means to make one, meaning there is a person out there that is not a consumer by making a commercial that appeals to their wants and desires it will make them a consumer
Reply:a person is not a consumer until he or she buys something or takes part in consuming

a social concept of desire may be the same as keeping up with the jone's or the neighbor next door i.e. if everyone had an ipod your child would make you buy him one too and with media and visual it is like getting a stupid kid or parents to buy a stupid kid a slinky toy that does nothing much at all but the catchy song and visual affects make it desireable
Reply:How does the media use coverage to exploit social concepts of desire (like what is hot to buy, what is in, like a commercial). And also of belonging such as you see old navy commercial you want to be like them so you go to the old navy store and buy what you saw on tv. or the campaign commercial about to stop smoking it is the TRUTH they advertise it as. So the TRUTH is trying to influence people to not smoke and they are trying to get you to get with thier group, a non smoking group.
Reply:I think it would mean influencing the customer. For instance, if certain advertisements successfully influence us to the extent that we decide we want to start buying those products, we have, in effect, been made a customer for that particular product.

Does that make sense? :)
Reply:"Explain how common notions of needs and wants are used in media and advertising to influence the consumer."

"Construct the consumer" probably means: to "make" the consumer do something different, or to change their mind.

The question wants you to explain how certain human desires (needs and wants) are used (or exploited) by the media and advertising to change a persons perception of a product/service, or to make a person buy a product/service.
Reply:explain how society understands the idea of desire and belonging and how those understandings are used in the media and in visual production in order to define the idea of what a consumer is...?

that's kinda what I'm getting out of it.. I'd suggest asking the person who gave you this promt to clairify, but if oyu can't I hope I dumbed it down right..

is this for an advertising final or something sheesh! : )
